FREDERICK, Md. (Feb. 26) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team opened the 2011 season on Saturday with a road game at Hood College.

A young Yellow Jackets team fell in its first action of the year by the final of 19-2. It was Hood's first win of the year, improving the Blazers' record to 1-2 for the season. Hood led 10-1 at halftime and out-shot the Jackets 44-13.

Waynesburg's first goal of the year came courtesy of senior midfielder Maria Shepas, who found the back of the net just over five minutes into the game. Shepas added the Yellow Jackets' other goal with 3:50 left in the game. Freshman Liz Hollis assisted on the latter of the two scores.

Senior defender Miranda Thornton recorded a team-high five groundballs in the loss. Freshman Kelsey Schlieper got the start in net for the Yellow Jackets and made 10 stops in her collegiate debut.

Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, March 2, when the Jackets travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 4 p.m. start.
