Shepas breaks school single-game scoring record against Medaille

Women's lacrosse drops 17-9 contest to Mavericks despite seven goals from Shepas

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 19) – A record-setting performance by senior midfielder Maria Shepas highlighted the Waynesburg women's lacrosse team's home game against Medaille College on Saturday at John F. Wiley Stadium.

Shepas scored seven of the Yellow Jackets' goals in a 17-9 victory for Medaille. The scoring explosion broke the single-game program record for goals scored in a game and total points tallied in a game. The Jackets are now 0-3 on the year, while the Mavericks improved to 1-1 in 2011.

After Medaille scored the game's first two goals, Shepas fired in her first tally of the afternoon to pull her team to within 2-1 with 16:14 to go in the first half. The Mavericks responded with the next four goals of the day to extend their lead to 6-1 before Shepas scored on a free position shot to cut the deficit to 6-2 with 9:31 showing on the clock.

Unfortunately, Medaille continued to answer single Waynesburg's goals with multiple scores of their own. Another three pack of Maverick goals pushed the visitors' lead to 9-2 with just over three minutes to go until halftime. Another goal by Shepas and a score by sophomore Molly Kramer coupled with Medaille's 10th of the afternoon made the score 10-4 at halftime.

Things didn't go well for Waynesburg in the early minutes of the second half as they gave up six unanswered goals over two-and-a-half minutes to go up 16-4 and effectively take control of the game. The Jackets showed no quit despite the 12-goal deficit and responded with the next five goals of the contest, including four by Shepas and the first of the season for sophomore Carly Smithyman.

With the scoreboard showing 16-9 in favor of Medaille, the Mavericks fired in the game's final score with just one second showing on the clock.

Kramer tallied her first assist of the season to give her two points in the game. Junior Erin Burry got the start in goal for Waynesburg and made a team season-high and personal collegiate-high 16 saves.

Waynesburg will take another shot at its first win of the season on March 24, when Wilson College comes to town. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
