WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 23) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season by doubling up Division II Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Yellow Jackets featured five different multi-goal scorers, who powered the home team to an 18-9 win over the Cardinals, who were playing in the first game of their program's history.
Waynesburg (1-1) flew out of the gates by scoring the first three goals of the game. Senior
Maria Shepas opened up the scoring with an unassisted tally that came just 37 seconds into the game. Sophomore
Toria Shepherd followed 13 seconds later to make the score 2-0 Jackets and she assisted on junior
Tiffany Stansberry's first goal of the game to put Waynesburg up 3-0 after just 1:14 of play.
After the Cardinals scored the first goal in their program's existence, Stansberry scored her second goal of the game to put her team up 4-1 after 2:43 of action. Wheeling Jesuit proceeded to score the next three goals of the game to tie the score at 4-4 before junior
Mandy Ormsby beat the Cardinal keeper to give her team the lead back at 5-4 with 18:25 showing on the clock. Ormsby's score was the first of seven-straight goals for the Jackets, who built up a commanding 11-4 advantage with 5:13 to go until halftime. Ormsby tallied three goals during the run, while Shepas added a pair.
After heading into halftime with an 11-5 lead, Shepherd fired two more scores into the back of the net over the first five minutes of play to give the Jackets a 13-5 advantage. With 12:35 left to play, Wheeling Jesuit cut Waynesburg's advantage to six goals (15-9), but the home team scored the final three goals of the evening to seal up the victory.
Ormsby (five goals), Shepherd (five) and Shepas (four) combined to score 14 of their team's 18 goals. Stansberry and junior
Carly Smithyman chipped in two goals each in the win. Shepherd added two assists for a game-high seven points. Waynesburg's second-straight game with at least 16 goals was more than enough offense for senior goalkeeper
Erin Burry, who tied a personal collegiate high with 16 saves. Burry also led Waynesburg with six groundballs.
The Jackets will be on the road for their next three games, the first of which will be in Granville, Ohio, as Waynesburg battles Denison on Saturday, Feb. 25. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
