LATROBE, Pa. (March 21) - Even though the Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team dropped a 21-7 decision to Saint Vincent on Wednesday, the Yellow Jackets still made some positive team history.
The Jackets' seven goals are the most scored by the team in program history against either Saint Vincent or Washington & Jefferson. Waynesburg, Saint Vincent and W&J are all members of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), but the conference does not sponsor women's lacrosse as a sport. Thiel College also sponsors women's lacrosse as a varsity sport, but the Jackets have yet to face the Tomcats, something they will do later this year.
After giving up the game's first goal, Waynesburg (1-4) fired back with goals by senior
Maria Shepas and sophomore
Toria Shepherd to grab a 2-1 lead after six minutes of play. Unfortunately, that was the last lead the Jackets enjoyed, but the game was far from decided after four-straight Saint Vincent (3-1) goals gave the home team a 5-2 advantage.
However, the Jackets responded with a free position goal by junior
Mandy Ormsby and Shepherd's second score of the contest to trim the Bearcats' advantage to 5-4 with 15:23 left to play until halftime. After that score, the Cats took control of the contest with seven unanswered goals and took a 12-4 lead with 4:30 to play in the first half.
After Ormsby tallied her team's fifth goal of the game to make the score 12-5, the Bearcats went on a 9-0 run that stretched from the end of the first half and into the second to build a 21-5 lead. Shepherd and Shepas wrapped up the scoring with the game's final two goals that found the back of the net during the last 12 minutes of play.
Shepherd, Shepas and Ormsby scored all seven of Waynesburg's goals and tallied three, two and two goals each, respectively. Shepas also led Waynesburg with five groundballs. Senior
Erin Burry started in net and played 17:33 before being replaced by freshman
Bre Tyler. The pair combined to make seven saves, six of which came from Tyler.
The Jackets return to action on Saturday, March 24, when they come back to John F. Wiley Stadium to square off with Oberlin. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
