WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 19) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team battled Division II West Virginia Wesleyan in one of the most exciting contests in the five-year history of the program. The thrilling game ended with the Yellow Jackets pulling out a 14-13 victory over the Bobcats.
Waynesburg's second win (2-8) matches a program high for victories in a season, but it didn't come easy against the visiting Cats (2-11). The game was tight from start to finish with neither team taking more than a two-goal lead until Wesleyan scored six-of-seven goals during a 12-and-a-half-minute stretch that turned a 5-3 Jacket lead into a 9-6 advantage for the visiting team. A goal by sophomore
Toria Shepherd trimmed the Bobcats' lead down to 9-7 at halftime.
Waynesburg's defense tightened up on the opposing offense and scored the first three goals of the half to take a 10-9 lead. Shepherd, senior
Maria Shepas and junior
Mandy Ormsby tallied the trio of scores before Wesleyan responded to tie the game at 10-10 with 13:51 remaining in the game. Shepas fired in an unassisted goal to give Waynesburg the lead back at 11-10, but the Cats tied the game back up (11-11) just over a minute later.
The home team appeared to take control of the game with scores by Shepherd and senior
Sam Swab, both of which were assisted on by Shepas, that pushed Waynesburg ahead 13-11. However, with just under nine minutes left to play, Wesleyan scored the first of two unanswered goals that tied the game up at 13-13 with 7:31 showing on the scoreboard.
Things ended on a happy note for the home team when Shepherd scored on a free position shot with just under four minutes left to play to go ahead 14-14. The Jackets were able to kill the final moments of the victory, which included a near goal by the Bobcats that was negated by a foul near the Jacket goal.
Shepas led all players with eight total points, including a program-record four assists, in the victory. Shepherd led all goal-scorers with six tallies, while Ormsby fired in a hat trick of scores. Senior goalkeeper
Erin Burry not only made 13 saves in the victory, but she also scooped up a team-high eight groundballs. Freshman
Bre Tyler added six groundballs.
The Jackets will go for a second-straight win on Saturday, April 21, when they celebrate senior day with a game against Urbana (Ohio). Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
