Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 20) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team scored the opening goal in Wednesday night's matchup with Saint Vincent and held the 1-0 advantage for the first 10 minutes against the Bearcats. Unfortunately, for the Yellow Jackets, who stayed within striking distance of SVC for most of the first half, the Cats eventually pulled away in the second period and took a 22-9 win at John F. Wiley Stadium.

Even though the Jackets (1-4) were unable to pick up their first-ever win against Saint Vincent (3-2), Waynesburg scored its most goals in the six-year series with the Green and Yellow, and the 13-point final deficit was the smallest in the series.

Junior Toria Shepherd opened the game's scoring after 1:29 of action to give Waynesburg its early edge. The home team stayed on top until the ninth minute of play when Saint Vincent scored a pair of player-down goals to go up 2-1. With 19:49 remaining in the half, Shepherd scored to tie the game at 2-2. The Cats fired back with three unanswered goal, before senior Mandy Ormsby got the Jackets back into the game with her first goal of the contest at the 12:48 mark of the first period.

Trailing by just two goals (5-3) with under 10 minutes remaining in the half, Waynesburg was out-scored 7-1 down the stretch of the period to fall behind 12-4 before going into the locker room at halftime. The Cats kept the momentum going in the second period and scored the first two post-break goals to go ahead 14-4.

Shepherd did what she could to keep her team's hopes for victory alive with a pair of unanswered goals to trim the deficit to 14-6 with 23:47 left to play. Unfortunately, SVC tallied eight of the next nine points to go up 22-7 and put the game out of reach. Shepherd and Ormsby posted one more goal each to close up the scoring.

Shepherd led all scorers on the night with a game-high six goals, while Ormsby tacked on the Jackets' three other points. Freshman JoHanna Phillips started and made 14 saves, while playing all 60 minutes in net. The home team held a 12-to-10 advantage in successful clears and kept close to Saint Vincent in ground balls (24-to-22) and draw controls (19-13).

Waynesburg returns to action on Tuesday, March 26, when the Yellow Jackets travel to Wilson College (Pa.). Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
