Ormsby and Shepherd tally five goals each in 14-7 victory

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 5) – Senior Mandy Ormsby and junior Toria Shepherd both put together big offensive numbers on Tuesday night to power the Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team to its first win of the season. Ormsby and Shepherd scored five goals each in the Yellow Jackets' 14-7 victory over the visiting Barons.

The Jackets (1-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a pair of goals by Ormsby, the second of which was assisted upon by Shepherd. Franciscan (0-3) cut its deficit in half with a goal with 19:54 left in the first half. Just over two minutes later, first-year player Makayla Vidosh rebuilt Waynesburg's two-goal lead off an Ormsby assist. With just under 14 minutes to play in the opening period, the Barons countered the Vidosh goal to make the score 3-2 Waynesburg.

The Jackets seemed to grab control of the contest by tallying the next three goals over a span of roughly 5:30. Shepherd, Ormsby and senior Carly Smithyman put the scoring run together. After seeing the home team build up a 6-2 advantage, Franciscan fired back with three goals of its own to pull back to within a single point (6-5) with just over one minute to play until halftime.

The Waynesburg offense made good use of the final 67 seconds of the first half by scoring two quick goals, one by Shepherd, the other by freshman Leena Mustafa, to take an 8-5 advantage into the period break. The pair of quick scores began a run of seven-straight goals that stretched over two periods and put firm control of the final outcome in the Jackets' hands.

Waynesburg scored the first five goals of the second period – three by Shepherd, two by Ormsby – to put together a game-high 13-5 lead. The Barons scored two of the final three tallies on the night, but it was too little, too late, as the Jackets put the game away.

Along with their five-goal nights, Ormsby and Shepherd tacked on an assist each to their nights to power the Jacket attack. Vidosh, Smithyman, Mustafa and sophomore Bre Tyler added one goal each to the winning effort. Freshman goalkeeper JoHanna Phillips backed up the Waynesburg attack with eight saves in goal to pick up her first collegiate victory. Speaking of which, Tuesday's triumph was the first for Jacket head coach Maria Shepas.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Thursday, March 7, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson to face the Presidents. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
