LATROBE, Pa. (April 20) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team played its final regular season match on Saturday at Saint Vincent College. The Yellow Jackets got five goals from junior standout Toria Shepherd, but it wasn't enough, as the Bearcats beat the Jackets for the second time this season, this time by a 23-8 final.
 
Waynesburg (2-8) stayed right with the Green and Yellow (10-3) for the first 11 minutes of action. Senior Mandy Ormsby staked the Jackets to a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal just 16 seconds into the game. The Bearcats responded with three unanswered goals over the next six minutes to take a 3-1 lead, but Shepherd ended the run with her first on the night to trim the deficit down to one goal (3-2).
 
SVC scored the next two goals to build a three-point advantage (5-2), but the Jackets pulled back to within a pair of scores thanks to Ormsby's second of the night. After two more Bearcat goals gave the home team a 7-3 lead, Shepherd tallied her second goal of the day to make the score 7-4. Unfortunately, that was the last time Waynesburg was within striking distance of the Cats, who scored nine goals in a row to build a 16-4 lead with 5:32 to play in the first half. Sophomore Bre Tyler scored the Jackets' final goal of the period, which Saint Vincent responded to with two more first-half scores to take an 18-5 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
The scoring cooled off considerably in the second half. Shepherd racked up Waynesburg's final two goals on the day, which gave her 30 for the season. She is now just one goal shy of head coach Maria Shepas' single-season record of 31, which was set in 2012.
 
Junior Amanda Bell made her first start in goal on the season and made 13 saves over 60 minutes in net.
 
With the 2013 regular season concluded, the Yellow Jackets turn their attention to the first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Invitational, which will be hosted by Thiel College on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27. Waynesburg will play the host Tomcats on Friday at 2 p.m. The winner of that game and the Washington & Jefferson/Saint Vincent clash will meet in the finals on Saturday.
