Shepherd taillies hat trick in 26-6 loss to Saint Vincent

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 18) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team opened its 2014 season on Tuesday night at John F. Wiley Stadium by facing off with fellow Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) member Saint Vincent College. After getting off to a fine start against the undefeated Bearcats, the Yellow Jackets gave up a string of unanswered goals that ultimately decided a 26-6 loss for the Orange and Black.

The Bearcats (4-0) scored the first three goals of the evening, before Waynesburg senior Toria Shepherd netted the Jackets' (0-1) first tally of the season. SVC regained a three-goal edge at 4-1, but one minute later, Waynesburg freshman Susie Marcoux found the net for the first time as a collegiate player off an assist from fellow freshman Jess Rains. Another Shepherd goal cut Saint Vincent's lead to 4-3 with 19:38 left in the first half.

Saint Vincent scored two more goals before Waynesburg senior Maddie Pierienger split the pipes to make score 6-4 in favor of the Bearcats early in the opening period. Unfortunately, Saint Vincent scored 10-straight goals to close the half with a 16-4 lead and went on to the win from that point forward.

Shepherd led the Orange and Black with three goals on a team-high six shots. Sophomore goalkeeper JoHanna Phillips started in net and recorded game highs in both saves (seven) and groundballs (five) over 30 minutes of play.

The Jackets return to action Saturday when they travel to face Lancaster Bible College at 1 p.m.
