Without Shepherd to shoulder the scoring load, freshman
Susie Marcoux took over the role of offensive focal point by tallying the first two goals of the afternoon, the first coming just 49 seconds into the contest. After Marcoux put the Jackets (1-1) in the lead, another freshman found the back of the net when
Jess Rains beat the Chargers' (0-5) keeper to make the score 3-0 with 12:28 remaining until halftime.
Yet another Waynesburg rookie,
Holly Bachman, extended the Jacket lead to 5-0 with back-to-back scores. Sophomore
Makayla Vidosh increased her team's advantage to six with a tally that occurred with 8:12 showing on the scoreboard.
Lancaster Bible broke up the shutout with just under six minutes to go until halftime, but senior Maddie Pieringer quickly regained the six-goal lead (7-1) with a score just over two minutes later. Sophomore
Makayla Vidosh brought about the halftime score of 8-1 with exactly two minutes remaining in the first period.
The Chargers stayed alive with back-to-back goals to open the second half, but Vidosh scored her second of the game to make the score 9-3. LBC responded with two more unanswered goals to pull to within four points (9-5) of victory, but the young Jackets maintained their composure and sealed the win over the next few minutes.
Marcoux re-established a seven-goal lead for her squad with back-to-back-to-back goals to make the score 12-5 with 14:27 remaining in the contest. The two teams exchanged points to close out afternoon, with Rains tallying the final point of the day.
Junior
JoHanna Phillips backed up a solid Waynesburg offense by making a season-high 15 saves over 56-plus minutes of work. The Orange and Black picked up the win despite being out-shot by a 31-24 margin. The Yellow Jackets also survived 12 free-position shots by the Chargers, while attempting just two of their own.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, March 26, when it hosts Wilson College. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
