WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 26) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 13-2 halftime lead and went on to secure a 16-7 win over Wilson College under sunny, chilly skies on Wednesday. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 2-1 on the season, which marks the first time the team has boasted a winning percentage over .500 since 2009. That same year also marked the last time Waynesburg won back-to-back contests.
The Jackets, who improved to 3-0 all-time against the Phoenix (0-1), fired out of the gates with a game-opening 5-0 run. Freshmen
Susie Marcoux and
Holly Bachman contributed two goals each to the big opening surge, before Wilson notched its first goal of the season to make the score 5-1 with 21:36 showing on the first-half clock.
The home team responded in a big way by tallying the next six scores to go up 11-1. Senior
Toria Shepherd fired in the first two scores of the run and was followed by sophomore
Makayla Vidosh, junior
Bre Tyler, Marcoux and freshman
Jess Rains in finding the back of the net. Wilson split the pipes one more time before halftime to end the home team's scoring outburst. Shepherd and Tyler added goals 12 and 13 before the two teams retired to their respective locker rooms.
The Jackets kept momentum on their side when period number two got underway, as juniors
Deidre Yeager and
Kelly Mehal extended their team's lead to 15-2 early in the half. Wilson scored five of the final six goals on the day, with junior
Nadine Leishman pumping in the home team's final score of the afternoon.
Junior
JoHanna Phillips and freshman
Kaitlyn Wetzel combined to make three saves in net. Shepherd chipped in a game-high two assists to give her a contest-best five total points in the win. Waynesburg held a noticeable 41-to-29 advantage in ground balls and out-shot its opposition 41 to 16.
The Jackets will go for a program-record third-straight win on Friday, March 28, when they host Capital University. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
