Yellow Jackets play well in 12-6 set back to Crusaders

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 28) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team put together one of its finest performances in the seven-year history of the program during Friday night's home game against Capital University. The Yellow Jackets were tied with the visiting Crusaders with under 20 minutes to play, before a game-ending rally put the home team on the short end of a 12-6 final score.

After Capital (5-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead, Jacket senior Toria Shepherd found the back of the net to tie the game 1-1 with just over 14 minutes showing on the first-half clock. The Crusaders fired back with back-to-back goals, but Waynesburg responded with three unanswered tallies to take a 4-3 edge. Shepherd, freshman Holly Bachman and freshman Jess Rains put the home team up with just over one minute remaining until halftime. Capital was able to tie the game at 4-4 just a few seconds later before the two squads broke for their respective locker rooms.

Shepherd pumped in her third goal of the evening to give the Jackets the lead back at 5-4 1:25 into period number two. Back-to-back goals by the Crusaders put Waynesburg back in a one-point hole at 6-5, but Rains' second score of the night tied things up at 6-6 with 20:24 left in the contest. Unfortunately, that was the last time the Orange and Black found the back of the net, as Capital clinched the win with a 6-0 game-ending run.

Junior JoHanna Phillips turned in one of her finest collegiate performances between the pipes by stopping 19-of-31 shots on goal. Waynesburg stayed competitive for the majority of the contest, despite being out-shot 45-to-20, including a 30-to-seven difference in the second half.

The Jackets are back in action on Friday, April 4, with a home game against Hilbert College. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
