Box Score WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 9) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team welcomed NCAA Division II member West Virginia Wesleyan to John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday. Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Yellow Jackets fell 15-9 to the visiting Bobcats.
Waynesburg (2-5) struck first when freshman
Holly Bachman opened the scoring with her 10th goal of the season just over a minute into the contest. However, the Yellow Jackets surrendered eight unanswered points to Wesleyan (4-9) over the next 20:27 before Bachman tossed her second into the net to end the lengthy scoreless drought.
The Jackets trimmed their deficit to 8-4 with 3:09 remaining in the half, thanks to senior
Toria Shepherd's team-leading 13th and 14th goals of the season. Less than a minute later, Wesleyan responded to take a 9-5 advantage.
Before the final minute of the first half, Waynesburg sophomore goalkeeper
JoHanna Phillips exited the game with an injury and was replaced by freshman
Kaitlyn Wetzel. The Bobcats capitalized one more time before the intermission to make the score 10-4.
Phillips returned to goal at the beginning of the second half, and the Jackets started the period with a spark. Bachman completed a hat trick 3:45 into the period and freshman
Susie Marcoux scored on a free position shot nearly three minutes later to make the score 10-6. Unfortunately, the Bobcats fired back with three unanswered tallies to move ahead by seven (13-6). The home team recorded goals by Shepherd, Bachman and junior
Kelly Mehal over the next 12 minutes of action to close out the Waynesburg scoring.
Bachman added one more goal to her hat trick for a team-high four scores, while Shepherd chipped in two of tallies of her own. Phillips racked up 15 saves in net for the home team.
Waynesburg will travel to Saint Vincent Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup. The Jackets fell at the hands of the Bearcats 26-6 at Waynesburg on March 18. Start time is slated for 11 a.m.
