BETHANY, W.Va. (March 27) – The Waynesburg University track & field team made its season debut at Saturday's Bethany Invitational. There were several strong performances for both the both the Yellow Jacket women, who finished in 10
th place in the team standings, and the men, who finished in ninth place.
Waynesburg's biggest performance came from senior Roman Lessard (Nicktown, Pa. / Bishop Carroll), who not only placed second overall in the javelin, but his throw of 54.85 meters (179-11) currently ranks eighth amongst all NCAA Division III performers.
Sophomore Aiden Sheely added a top-10 effort in the javelin with the eighth-place heave of 38.63 meters (126-9).
Graduate student Mike Trax (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) put together a pair of top-five performances in the jumps. Trax placed second in the triple jump with a hop, skip and a jump of 12.04 meters (39-6) and took fifth in the long jump with a mark of 6.23 meters (20-5).
Sophomore Andrew Kemerer (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) also shined in the pit, placing fourth in the triple with a distance of 11.93 meters (39-1.75).
The Waynesburg men were led on the track by senior Nate Jecelin (Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley), who finished eighth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:30.75.
On the women's side, Waynesburg posted three top-10 finishes in the javelin thanks to the efforts of sophomore Rachel Speelman, junior Ivy Allen (DeMotte, Ind. / North Newton) and senior Megan McElligott (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central). Speelman led the trio with a sixth-place throw of 25.6 meters (84-0). Allen posted the number-seven toss of 24.90 meters (81-8.5), while McElligott logged the ninth-place distance of 20.00 meters (65-7.5).
Speaking of multiple top-10 showings, sophomore Audrey Doby (South Park, Pa. / South Park) finished fifth in the triple jump and seventh in the high jump. Doby's top effort in the triple yielded a mark of 8.83 meters (28-11.75). She cleared 1.42 meters (4-7.75) in the high jump.
Allen showcased her all-around athleticism by moving from the throws to the jumps and posting the 10
th-place height in the high jump of 1.32 meters (4-4).
Senior Katherine Fair (Erie, Pa. / General McLane) paced the Waynesburg women on the track with her fourth-place effort in the 400 hurdles. Fair crossed the finish line in 75.09 seconds.
Freshman Joula Anderson (Greensburg, Pa. / Greensburg Salem) had a solid collegiate debut on the track after logging the number-six time in the 5,000 meters (20:58.82).
The Jackets are expected to be back in competition on Saturday, April 3, when they travel to Beaver Falls for the Geneva College Invite. Start time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
