GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 11) – The Waynesburg University track & field team hit the road to compete in the Thiel College Tomcat Invitational. The Yellow Jacket women placed third out of nine teams, while the men finished in seventh place.
The Waynesburg men and women really shined in the distance running events, with senior
Matt Durgin (Winfield, W.Va. / Winfield) placing first overall in the mixed 10,000 meters and junior
Aubrey Wingeart (King George, Va. / King George) taking seventh overall, which was the top finish for a female runner. Durgin broke the tape in 34:57.28, while Wingeart completed the race in 40:14.53, which was nearly 30 seconds faster than the next female finisher.
Durgin was joined in the overall top three by freshman
Andrew Kasper (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park). Kasper posted the number-three time of 35:58.40.
Similarly, the Jacket women placed first and third in the 5,000 meters. Senior
Gianna Pugliano (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township) broke the tape in 19:05.00, while senior
Nicole Shelton (Dover, Pa. / Christian School of York) took the bronze with a mark of 19:12.04.
Waynesburg added top-10 finishes in both 1500-meter races. Senior
Becca Volz (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) placed seventh with a time of 5:21.95, while senior
Nate Jecelin (Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) and freshman
Trevor Verkleeren (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) placed sixth and 10
th, respectively, with times of 4:21.38 and 4:29.62.
Junior
Katherine Fair (Erie, Pa. / General McLane) continued a strong season in the hurdles. She posted the number-three time in the 100 hurdles (16.37) and the number-five mark in the 400 hurdles (1:14.31).
Moving to the field events, sophomore
Katherine Henderson (Hundred, W.Va. / Hundred) logged a pair of top-five performances in the jumps. She placed fourth in the high jump after clearing 1.47 meters (4-10) and took fifth in the long jump after posting a top leap of 4.71 meters (15-5).
Senior
Roman Lessard (Nicktown, Pa. / Bishop Carroll) continued to produce in the javelin this spring with a fourth-place showing at Thiel. His top toss sailed 51.54 meters (161-1).
Staying in the throws, sophomore Aiden Sheely (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechnaicsburg) logged top-10 finishes in both the discus and shot put. He took seventh in the discus with toss of 34.77 meters (114-1) and 10
th in the shot with a heave of 11.92 meters (39-1). Speaking of the shot put, sophomore teammate
Justice McCamick (Saint Clairsville, Ohio / Saint Clairsville) posted the number-nine distance of 11.94 meters (39-2).
Waynesburg returns to competition on Saturday, April 17, when it takes part in the Grove City Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
