MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 19) – The Waynesburg University men's track & field team opened the outdoor portion of its schedule on Saturday when it traveled to the Stan Romanoski Open, which was hosted by West Virginia University. There was no team scoring at the event, but the Yellow Jacket throwers highlighted several strong performances.
 
Sophomore Aidan Sheely (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) placed 10th in the 38-man discus thanks to a throw of 32.17 meters (105-06). Sheely looked even better in the shot put, where he placed fourth overall out of 38 competitors with a heave of 12.75 meters (41-10). Freshman Garrett Hillard (Greenville, Pa. / Greenville) logged the number-six toss of 12.09 meters (39-8).
 
Junior Jerry Farrelli (Monongahela, Pa. / Ringgold) led the Yellow Jackets in the javelin after posting the number-six throw of 44.85 meters (147-2) in a field of 33 athletes.
 
Freshman Adam Helbling (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) paced Waynesburg in the jumps after taking eighth out of 20 competitors in the long jump of 6.18 meters (20-3.5).
 
Moving to the track, the Jackets' 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Zach Berrott (Plum, Pa. / Plum), sophomore Kai Herbert (Baltimore, Md. / Mt. St. Joseph), sophomore Isaiah Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Montour) and sophomore Cole Thiec (Stoneborough, Pa. / Lakeview) placed second overall with a time of 44.05 seconds.
 
Herbert added an individual bronze medal in the 110-meter hurdles after crossing the finish line in 17.29 seconds, which was tops amongst Division III competitors. Sophomore Matthew Shank (Windber, Pa. / Windber) logged the number-four time in the 1,500-meter steeplechase after completing the race in 5:17.35, while sophomore Andrew Kasper (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) gave the Jackets another strong showing in the distance events after placing fifth in the 5,000 meters (16:47.51).
 
Thiec posted the number-seven time in the 400-meter hurdles thanks to a time of 1:07.45, while Mathews placed eighth in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 23.95 seconds. Freshman Caleb Seeger (Richfield, Pa. / East Juniata) added an eighth-place showing in the 400 meters thanks to a time of 54.57 seconds.
 
Waynesburg is scheduled to be back in competition on Saturday, March 26, when it takes part in the Bethany Invitational.
