BETHANY, W.Va. (March 26) – The Waynesburg University men's track and field team braved the inclement weather conditions to compete in Saturday's Bethany Invitational. The Yellow Jackets' discomfort caused by the cold, gloomy conditions proved to be worthwhile, as they placed fifth in the 12-team field.

Sophomore Kai Herbert (Baltimore, Md. / Mt. St. Joseph) shined in the 110 meters for Waynesburg. After placing the fourth-fastest time in the preliminary round with a mark of 16.94 seconds, Herbert locked up fourth place in the finals with a time of 17.54 seconds. He added the number-eight time in the 200-meter dash after completing the spring in 24.53 seconds.

The Jackets saw three of their own in the top half of the 800 meters. Freshman Nolan Curran (Ellwood City, Pa. / Ellwood City) led the trio with the number-eight time of 2:16.20. Sophomore Andrew Kasper (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) placed 10th with a mark of 2:19.15, while junior Jac Cokley (Cochranton, Pa. / Cochranton) posted the 12th-place time of 2:22.74.

Kasper also placed eighth in the 5,000 meters after finishing the event in 16:44.58. Sophomore Luke Whisel (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) completed the race two spots later (10th) with a time of 16:48.90.

Moving to the field events, Waynesburg enjoyed plenty of success in the javelin, where it placed three in the top five. Senior Jerry Farrelli (Mongahela, Pa. / Ringgold) led the charge by placing second with a top throw of 43.11 meters (141-5.2). Freshman Isaac Huey (Klymer, Pa. / Purchase Line) logged the number-four distance of 42.11 meters (138-1.9), while classmate Josh Panizales (Cranberry Township, Pa. / Seneca Valley) posted the fifth-place mark of 39.61 meters (129-11.4).

Sophomore Aidan Sheely (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) took 10th in the javelin, but that was far from his best showing of the day. He earned the bronze medal in the shot put thanks to a heave of 12.93 meters (42-5.1). He completed a busy day with a 12th-place effort in the discus.

Speaking of the shot pot, freshman Garrett Hillard (Greenville, Pa. / Greenville) placed one spot behind Sheely after recording the number-four mark of 12.89 meters (42-3.5).

Waynesburg is scheduled to be back in competition on Saturday, April 2, when it takes part in the Dave Labor Invitational, which is being hosted by Slippery Rock University.
