BOARDMAN, Ohio (April 20) –
Matthew Karpeal (Smithfield, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) posted a top-five individual finish at the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Spring Championship at the at the Mill Creek Golf Course (south course) on Friday and Saturday.
The PAC Championship format features 36 holes in the fall and 36 in the spring. Waynesburg finished eighth with a four round team score of 1362 strokes, 17 shots back of seventh-place Thiel. The Jackets posted a team score of 351 on Friday and improved with a 339 on Saturday.
Allegheny's Carter Hassenplug claimed Player of the Year status by virtue of winning the individual title by 11 strokes (284). The Gators edged W&J by three strokes to win the team title with a team score of 1205.
Karpeal entered the spring championship join second place on the individual leaderboard. After shooting seven-over on the front nine on Friday, he went even-par over the final nine holes on his way to a 77. Karpeal notched three birdies on Saturday en route to a 76. Across four rounds, Karpeal totaled 298 strokes (76-69-77-76) to finish third overall.
By virtue of his top-five individual finish, Karpeal collects All-PAC First Team honors. He is the first player to take first team all-conference honors since Colin Wilson in 2011. Both players notched third-place finishes.
Tyler Townsend (Normal, Ill. / Bloomington) posted his top round at the PAC Championships on Saturday with an 83. He finished the championships with a four-round score of 349 to finish 30th.
Nathan Barnhart (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) turned in rounds of 91 and 93 to finish 34th overall (369).
Justin Clevenger (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) (97-87) and
Gage Fuller (99-102) played just the spring portion of the conference championships.
