WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 2) – As the spring season begins at Waynesburg University, senior golfer Matt Karpeal (Smithfield, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) finds himself stepping into the final chapter of a journey that has defined his college experience both on and off the course. His four years at Waynesburg have meant far more than scores and standings. They've been about growth, relationships and moments that will last long after graduation.

"It's a little surreal knowing this is the final stretch, so I'm really trying to take it all in and appreciate every moment."

That reflection is rooted in how much he's evolved since his freshman season. Over that time, Karpeal has matured into a disciplined, accountable golfer with a deeper understanding of his own game. He's learned how to manage pressure and embrace the differences that make his style unique; lessons that have translated into consistent success.

That consistency is no accident according to head coach Mike Cipoletti.

"Matt has swing mechanics that are fundamentally very good. That's probably first and foremost in explaining his talent level," Cipoletti explains. "But, I think what explains his event success is his daily approach to practice as well as his approach to gameday. He is incredibly consistent in everything he does."

That approach has produced standout moments, including one of the most memorable performances of his career during the fall of his sophomore year. At the 2023 Presidents' Athletic Conference Fall Championships, he fired a three-under score of 69 at Avalon Golf and Country Club, finishing just one stroke off the lead. It was a defining moment; not just for the score, but for the celebration that followed with teammates and coaches.

Now in his senior year, Karpeal's role has naturally shifted. Once a young player learning the ropes, he's become the standard others look to.

"As a senior, my role has shifted more toward leadership," Matt says. "I try to set a good example through my work ethic and attitude and help guide the younger guys when I can. It's about being someone they can rely on, both during tournaments and in practice."

That leadership has been evident from the very beginning. Coach Cipoletti noted that his top golfer was asked to step into the program's leadh spot immediately as a freshman; a challenge many would shy away from.

"We asked him to be the number one golfer in the lineup from day one," Cipoletti says. "Which is kind of unfair for a first-year player, but he never blinked and has been a team leader both on and off the course the entire time."

Coming off a highly successful junior campaign, Karpeal is focused on building momentum. His mindset is simple: stay consistent, keep improving and refine the small details that can make a big difference.

"When you consistently score inside the top 10 of the league, it's small tweaks that might make the difference in the two or three strokes that separate the leaders," Cipoletti said. "Matt seems to be very dialed in on the fine details. He also seems to have added some carry distance to his drives this season."

As he enters the final stretch of his collegiate career, the all-PAC honoree isn't letting pressure take over. Instead, he's focused on staying present and competing freely.

"I want to leave everything out there on the golf course and be proud of what I accomplished.," Karpeal said.

Karpeal's goals reflect both personal ambition and team pride. Individually, he aims to continue improving and contributing. As a team, the focus is on consistency, competitiveness and representing Waynesburg University at the highest level.

"There are going to be ups and downs, but that's part of golf," Karpeal said. "There is so much opportunity for improvement, but each player must want it."

One event he has circled on his personal calendar is the Peter C. Rossin Memorial Invitational hosted by Washington & Jefferson College at Southpointe Golf Club in Canonsburg, Pa., which is widely regarded as one of the toughest courses in the conference. For the consummate competitor, it's the kind of challenge that brings out his best.

With the amount of holes on Karpeal's personal collegiate scorecard beginning to dwindle, Cipoletti has begun looking back on one of the finest collegiate playing careers he has been a part of.

"Statistically, he has achieved more than any of the golfers I have ever coached.," Cipoletti said. "He would definitely be in the discussion of the best golfers to play at Waynesburg. It's not just the success he has achieved. He's our best golfer and is also our hardest worker and best student. He's been the epitome of a successful student-athlete, so it's natural and easy for his teammates to model themselves after his approach."

As for what's ahead, Cipoletti has high expectations for his senior leader.

"I hope he's able to hold onto his top-10 position; that's the main goal in my mind so he can have another all-conference season," Cipoletti said. "It's a big deal for Matt to have three All-PAC seasons. I'd like to see him make a strong two-day run at the championships and compete for a top-three finish. He is definitely capable."

As his final season unfolds, Matt Karpeal isn't just chasing another top finish. He's embracing every moment of a career that has already left a lasting mark on Waynesburg University golf.
